PROJECT UPDATE | Trial and Error in Fiber
My great uncle, Bob Kirchmyer was a fiber artist and teacher. His beautifully vibrant sculptures resided in his Buffalo, NY home like wavy, bulbous cocoons hanging from the ceiling, lounging on walls, and sweeping across tabletops. He gifted a couple of his fiber works to me when I was an undergrad and taught me the basics of his fiber sculpting techniques in my early teens. I had been debating whether to start a fiber project for a couple years now in fear of failing. When I went to Oregon, I fell in love with a variety of grasses bordering the playa; I knew I had the resources at my fingertips. The second night we residents gathered for dinner, I sat across from Paul Skenazy, a writer out of Santa Cruz, CA. He didn't speak much, but when he did he reminded me in mannerism, appearance, and poetics of Uncle Bob. Paul, fellow resident and poet Farnaz Fatemi, and I spent time together discussing their work and my anticipated dive into fibers. Turns out Paul had a past in basketweaving, and a close friend who also suffered from tuberculosis as did Uncle Bob. These were enough the little connections I needed to begin this process of trial and error--dyeing cotton, wrapping wheat reed, and sculpting forms. 04/09/20 |

NEW MEXICO IN COLOR | Residency at Starry Night
With limited room for supplies in my suitcase and one week's worth of time exploring New Mexico and Arizona, I decided to journal everyday and take color samples of both natural specimens and built environment. Each color palette becomes of a snapshot of a memory to a particular place in Truth or Consequences, NM in a particular moment in time. Thank you Starry Night for hosting my creative retreat and igniting a creative direction I could never have imagined. I hope to return one day to see how these colors have changed. 07/18/17 |
